Beliefs and Practices of Baptists

Bible as Sole Authority

"All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.... " 2 Tim. 3:16-17

We accept the Bible as the basis what we believe and how we live our lives. When faced with a decision, we ask, "What does the Bible say? "

We encourage daily Bible reading, personal and group Bible study, Scripture meditation, and memorization of Scripture.

Autonomy of Local Church

"And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy." Col. 1:18

Christ is the recognized head of the church. We affirm that a local congregation is self-governing and has the authority to make decisions for its own fellowship. At the same time, we also recognize the value of connecting and working with other groups of Christians.

Priesthood of Every Believer

"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God..." 1 Peter 2:9

As Baptists we affirm that each believer has direct access to God through Jesus. We believe that as priests we all share the responsibility of ministry and service within the church and in the community.

Discipleship

"Go and make disciples of all nations... Teaching them to obey all I have commanded you." Matthew 28:19-20

A disciple is a follower of Jesus who leads by following His example. Discipleship is the process of believing in Jesus, learning to be more like Him, and teaching others to do the same.

Baptism

"As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment the heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ' This is my Son, whom I love; with him, I am well pleased.'" Matthew 3:16-17

Baptism is the outward expression of an internal change. During baptism, we are immersed in water in the presence of a congregation of believers, publicly symbolizing the death of our sinful lives. Re-emerging from the water symbolizes our birth into new life in Jesus.

Sharing Jesus' Love

Jesus said to them, "go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. " Mark 16:15

Each of us has a faith story which reflects how our lives have changed since we came to know Jesus. As scripture says, we are called to share our faith in our communities and across our world. We do this through our words and through our actions.

Want to share your story with others? Email belong@bonairbaptist.org with your story today.

Giving

"A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD.”  Lev. 27:30

We practice tithing for the support the mission of Christ’s body, the church. We recognize that giving 10% of our income is the biblical standard for tithing.
