The Virginia War Memorial

The Virginia War Memorial serves as a place for remembrance and honors Virginians who died in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, and the Global War on Terroism. Despite its imposing presence on a hill above the James River, it is one of Richmond’s best-kept secrets, a true gem where captivating programming honors the fallen.

The center includes exhibits, a Virginia Medal of Honor Gallery, the Veterans’ Changing Art Gallery and a movie theater, all dedicated to educating the public about the state’s military history. The names of nearly 12,000 Virginians killed in action are carved in stone and glass on the walls of the Shrine of Memory featuring the statue Memory watching over an eternal flame.

Our 90-minute tour will include two films, the exhibit areas and walk outside to the Shrine of Memory. Lunch will be at Jason’s Deli (pay on your own) where delicious soups, salads and sandwiches are served along with free soft-serve ice cream to top off your lunch.
