Matt Buckley, Buford Road Campus

Positions Past/Present:

  • Governance Study Team Lead
  • Minsistry Coordination Group - Member & Strategic Planning Team Lead
  • Student Ministry - Fusion Leader
  • Stewardship Education Team - Team Lead

Calling/Interest to Serve on Church Council:

Both in professional pursuits and in volunteer activities, I enjoy opportunities to think strategically and solve complex problems, particularly in team leadership environments. Also, as a part of the BABC Governance Study Team which resulted in the formation of the BABC Church Council, I feel that I can assist in providing perspective and be a resource in collaborating with the other Church Council members.

I believe that the Church Council leadership approach and the related development of a strong leadership culture within teams at BABC is important to enabling us individually and as a church to maximize our time, energy, and resources on God's plan, the Great Commission, and showing love to others outside of our church by meeting their needs and building deep relationships.

Opportunities for BABC:

In an environment where it will be more common for folks to not have a church-based family background, we have an opportunity to figure out how we as a church can be increasingly relevant and impactful to the communities we serve. In thinking about he vision to be "A Place to Belong...A Place to Become," I think of it as meeting people where they are in their spiritual journey and helping to meet their needs along the way just as others have done the same for us. We do this because God wants us to love others and meet their needs as a reflection of His unconditional love.

Leigh Ann Cahill, Buford Road Campus

Positions Past/Present:

  • Deacon/Service Team Lead
  • Ghana Team
  • Member Mobilization
  • Communication Team
  • Sanctuary Choir
  • Handbell Choir
  • Stephen Ministry Leader

Calling/Interest to Serve on Church Council:

I love the BABC family. I have grown so much spiritually listening to what God wants me to do. 10-15 years ago, I was happy to be in choir and handbells to worship and minister. By stepping out of my comfort zone on four Ghana trips and serving as a deacon, I feel it’s time to become involved in other areas. The BABC family has been so good to me, and I want to give back. If it is God’s will, serving on the
Church Council will allow me to do that. I love working and serving with people. If elected, I welcome the opportunity to work with council members to uphold BABC’s mission.

Opportunities for BABC:

There are many opportunities for BABC to grow and become the people God wants. We must continue to keep members engaged and our services relevant. Partnerships like HHS are just the beginning of how we can serve our community. Our partnership in Ghana allows opportunities to grow and see how God works through us to bring wonderful people to Christ and teach skills to provide for their families. There are always opportunities for us to serve God, our church family, and community and even if an opportunity appears daunting, all we need to remember is Matthew 19:26, “With God, all things are possible.”

  • Deacon - Chairman
  • Family Needs Ministry Team Leader

Calling/Interest to Serve on Church Council:

I have been a member for 34 years and have tremendous respect and love for our church. My life has come full circle, and now I am the one who is responsible to help other families and couples that come to BABC. I am proud to serve God in this way and would be honored to share my experience and history on the council to make BABC the best it can be. To borrow a quote from our pastor, “I am all in at Bon Air Baptist Church” accurately reflects how I feel about my commitment. It would be an honor to serve on Church Council, and I would accept my responsibilities in humility as a God-called servant. I believe there are many qualified candidates for Church Council at BABC, and if I am selected, I will gladly serve to the best of my ability.

Opportunities for BABC:

BABC has been one of the most dynamic churches in the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV). We have identified opportunities and implemented many changes that have allowed us to meet the needs and ever-changing trends in how people worship the true Jesus Christ. These changes have brought many seekers to accept Jesus as their Savior and changed their lives to follow him. BABC has developed mission churches, created nontraditional worship services, created multisite churches, and all the while continued our strong mission giving for the spreading of the love of Christ. In our present world of COVID and civil unrest, people are more than ever looking for something or someone that can give them hope, comfort, and peace in the chaos of our world. I believe BABC once again has a tremendous opportunity to help those who are seeking hope and comfort in a world of fear and unrest that the love of Christ will provide stability during this time of unrest. I will work with our church to find opportunities where we can bring the Light of the World through faith in Jesus Christ.

Fred Dunning, Buford Road Campus

Positions Past/Present:

  • Deacon
  • Ministry Coordinating Group
  • Sr. Pastor Search Team
  • Church Council 16-17
  • Administration (lay co-coordinator)
  • Co-campaign Leader to become debt free
  • Stewardship Team Leader

Calling/Interest to Serve on Church Council:

I believe I can provide a positive contribution to the discussion, decisions, and the work of our church in fulfilling our mission as led by the Holy Spirit and thereby bring glory and honor to our Lord Jesus Christ. To be a bright light shining during the darkest times. To be salt and light in a hostile world. Being faithful. Keep false teaching and preaching out. Stay true to the Word. If we don't intentionally stay true to the Word, we will start to drift.

Opportunities for BABC:

We have to go to the people and be attractional, missional, and incarnational. Exit the church
and enter the mission field. Opportunities to expand our reach in our community and the greater Richmond area.

Tara Hatcher, Buford Road Campus

Positions Past/Present:

  • Emerging Leaders
  • Started and led Single Parents Sunday School class
  • Middle School Sunday School Teacher
  • High School Sunday School Teacher
  • Student Pastor Search Team
  • Young Adult Task Force (lead)
  • Women’s Small Group Leader
  • Greeter

Calling/Interest to Serve on Church Council:

I am interested in supporting the vision of BABC by working with other members to solve problems, discuss solutions, and encourage healthy discussions around the important issues our church encounters. I am highly involved with student ministry and feel called to ensure that it is strong and
vibrant at BABC. I have served in leadership roles and worked on many committees and teams at BABC and feel I have experience and understanding that would contribute greatly to the Church Council if elected.

Opportunities for BABC:

The top opportunities we face are impacting our youth. We need to be able to relay the big picture and connect with students. We need to pursue this through a multi-generational approach, mentoring, and helping our students feel more connected to the broader church.

Church Council Pics (4)

Terry Judge, Buford Road Campus

Positions Past/Present:

  • Member Mobilization Co-Coordinator
  • Worship Leader in the Gathering Band
  • Transition Team Member
  • Children’s Preschool Volunteer

Calling/Interest to Serve on Church Council:

I believe I have Bon Air Baptist Church’s best interest in mind and heart. I have the ability to see things objectively and from a macro and micro perspective. I am happy to serve the church, and God, in any way that I am capable to do so. I love our church very much and would be honored to serve in this role.

Opportunities for BABC:

I think a couple of our greatest opportunities at Bon Air Baptist Church are 1) our youth, and 2) getting our members and longtime attendees (who are not members) more involved at Bon Air Baptist Church. Growing a strong youth following is vital to the strength and future of our church. If our youth are engaged, they will grow in their faith and bring their family and friends which will help to keep our church thriving. Getting involved with different things throughout the church has been a wonderful experience for me. Whether it’s joining a Bible study class, a small group, or just getting plugged in to volunteer with something at Bon Air Baptist (one time, a few times, or even on a regular basis). The more involved you get, the more of a family the church becomes, and the more you will grow in your faith. Like the saying goes: you get out what you put in.

Church Council Pics (5)

Erica Schulman, Buford Road Campus

Positions Past/Present:

  • Part-time staff as Young Adult Ministry Intern
  • Young Adult Task Force
  • RBA Study Team
  • Member-Mobilization Co-Coordinator
  • Sunday School Teacher in multiple age groups from babies to adults

Calling/Interest to Serve on Church Council:

God has led me to serve in many different roles through the years, which I would not have originally considered, and this is one of those times. Through focused prayer and Bible study, my husband and I discerned the leading of the Holy Spirit for me to serve in this capacity. It will be a privilege to serve my community through the ministry of the Bon Air Baptist Church family that we have been called and committed to.

Opportunities for BABC:

There are many opportunities in RVA, and one that has great potential is the Forest Hill corridor. This opportunity allows us to reach unchurched families and young adults in that area as well as open up more opportunities for our church family to serve, share our faith, and reach our community with the love of Jesus.
