Jerleen Jeter-Kao

ESL Ministry Coordinator

It has been an honor and a pleasure to help ESL students achieve their dreams and make a better life for their families by learning English. I have friends from all over the world because of my profession and I love them all. I have worked in education, teaching and tutoring preschool through high school, for over 20 years. Ten years ago, I began working with Adult ESL in the Chesterfield County Public School system, with a focus on the Literacy level, and was able to adapt the phonics I taught in Kindergarten to ESL adults.

When I came to Bon Air Baptist Church, I was amazed by the teacher’s dedication and love for their students. Besides offering free adult ESL classes, the big BABC bonus offered to our students is free childcare. This makes it possible for parents to peacefully study English knowing their children are in a safe environment. Along with teaching, I have directed a childcare center, been assistant director at a tutoring center, and homeschooled my own children.

As a part of CCPS and other establishments, I have earned various certifications that include ESL training, teaching reading/phonics, and CPR certification. I have a Bachelor of Science from Longwood University.

My husband and I have 3 kids. Our older daughter is an occupational therapist, and our twins are in high school. We have two grand dogs that stay with us when my daughter and her husband travel. My hobby is gardening and I have a strawberry patch and blackberry bushes. I also have many flowers in my yard: Hydrangeas, peonies, azaleas, irises, tulips, jonquils, lily of the valley, calla lilies, and many more.

My favorite color is brown. It is the color of three of my favorite things: chocolate, coffee, and my children’s eyes!
