CCLI License #347638 Buford Rd. CCS License #13868 Buford Rd. Hymn: O God, Our Help in Ages Past Verse 1 O God, our help in ages past Our hope for years to come Our shelter from the stormy blast And our eternal home Verse 2 Under the shadow of Thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure Sufficient is Thine arm alone And our defense is sure Verse 3 Before the hills in order stood Or earth received her frame From everlasting Thou art God To endless years the same Verse 4 A thousand ages in Thy sight Are like an evening gone Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun Verse 5 Time, like an ever rolling stream Bears mortals all away They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day Verse 6 O God, our help in ages past Our hope for years to come Be Thou our guard while life shall last And our eternal home Responsive Reading Leader: Pastor Chris Wondree Leader: O God, let our sorrow and memories of this unanticipated and unprecedented season of loss, push us to be present with You and rekindle, within us, a joy that we know only comes from being about our Father’s business. For this is who we are: a people of The Promise a people shaped in the image of God whose very being generates joy in the universe, yet Who also weeps and grieves with us. Leader: And since You weep and grieve with us allow that which harmed and saddened us in the past be used as You continually sanctify us to become ... More sympathetic, More compassionate, More conscious of our frailty and of daily dependence on You, More invested in Your kingdom’s work here on earth and in the hope of Your return. Leader: Thank You for not wasting our greatest sorrows, O God, but using them to teach us how to live, more, in Your presence—fully alive to pain and joy and sorrow and hope-in the places where our shattering and Your shaping meet. Let us neither ignore our pain, pretending all is okay when it isn’t, nor coddle and magnify our pain so that we dull our capacity to experience all that remains good in this life. Let us learn now, O Lord. To breathe out sorrow, to breathe in joy. To breathe out lament, to breathe in hope. To breathe out pain, to breathe in comfort. Leader: As our pain has been exposed, we are grateful that we are met by Your comforting Spirit, O Christ. Now bless each of us, O Lord, in our journeys from here. May our grief and loss be turned to eternal hope and our sorrows to eternal joys through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen. Moment of Silence Scripture Reading Charlotte Cloe Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. So, Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. 1 Kings19: 1-5a Song of Reflection - Lord, I Need You Shane & Shane/The Worship Initiative CCLI License #347638 Buford Rd. CCS License #13868 Buford Rd. Song of Reflection: Lord, I Need You Terry Judge, Katherine Phillips, Chris Patch, vocalists Kevin Cloe, guitarist Lord I come, I confess. Bowing here, I find my rest. And without You, I fall apart, You're the one that guides my heart. Lord, I need You, oh, I need You. Every hour, I need You. My one defense, my righteousness; Oh, God, how I need You. Where sin runs deep, Your grace is more. Where grace is found is where You are. And where You are, Lord, I am free. Holiness is Christ in me. Teach my song to rise to You When temptation comes my way, And when I cannot stand, I'll fall on You. Jesus, You're my hope and stay. Testimony A Season of Grief and Loss - The Tree Rev. Dr. John Upton Message: A Season of Grief and Loss - The Tree A SEASON OF GRATITUDE (HOW GOD SHOWED UP) “I was gifted the opportunity to reflect on and appreciate the most important things in my life. It forced me to be grateful to be alive each day, and to feel a global connection that continues to remind me of our interdependence and need to trust God.” Piano Offertory - Great Is Thy Faithfulness - arr. Bober Shellie Johnson Scripture Reading Pastor Kim Boswell All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” So, he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and put Your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too.” The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. 1 Kings19:5b-13a Hymn - I Will Make All Things New arr. Hymn: I Will Make All Things New based on Isaiah 43:1-19 When you pass through the waters, I am with you. When you go through the sea, I am there. When you pass through the fire, the flames will not harm you. I am God, I am Lord, I am there! I will make all things new; I will watch over you. I will renew, I will restore, I am God! I will make all things new; I paid a price for you. I am the Lord. I am your God, you are Mine. In your trial or your sorrow, I am with you. When hope fades for tomorrow, I am there. In your trouble or pain, call My name; I'll be with you. I am God, I am Lord, I am there! I created the heavens; I created the earth. I created My people. Rejoice! I am God! Hymn: Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine Verse 1 Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine; O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his Spirit, washed in his blood Chorus This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long. This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long. Verse 2 Perfect submission, perfect delight, visions of rapture now burst in my sight; angels descending bring from above echoes of mercy, whispers of love. Verse 3 Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Savior am happy and blessed; watching and waiting, looking above, filled with his goodness, lost in His love. A SEASON OF HOPE “Covid allowed me to appreciate the ways that God has given us to circumvent challenges/obstacles that the “world” places in our path … [and to help me] understand that God will find a way for His Word to go out even in the midst of existential crises.” - Nelson Lawson Scripture Reading Pastor Brandon Woodard Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and put Your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet. Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu. Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel - all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.” 1 Kings19: 13B-18 Testimony A Season of Hope - And Beyond Rev.
